Mission Statement
The New York Institute for Haiti Advocacy is a publicly supported foundation, as per section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Service Code. Our mission is to advocate for the rights and dignity of immigrant New Yorkers. We encourage the participation of Haitian-Americans in all aspects of life in New York. We instill public understanding of the cultures and customs of immigrants in New York. We promote new knowledge and concepts in service of international justice. We identify and disseminate information about best practices in human rights and immigrant rights.
Description
NYIHA advocates on behalf of diasporas in the United States, Dominican Republic and Central America. It publishes comparative submissions spanning the broadest disciplinary and methodological range, which address the interplay between Diasporas and human rights. It offers international and crosscultural perspectives to promote diversity and tolerance. It contributes to the preservation of the audio and visual memories of African Diasporas in the Americas in fields of media arts, music, film and video. Our main project is the Media Access for Diversity Project. The mission of this project is to provide a learning environment where young New Yorkers of Haitian and Dominican descent can learn the visual and text languages of the media to document their world. This project connects new audiences across ethnic and geographic boundaries.
